Abstract/Contents:"Agronomic research for creeping bentgrass seed production in Canada is being conducted at the University of Manitoba. Creeping bentgrass spreads rapidly via stoloniferous growth, forming a dense sod by the first seed harvest, and resulting in limited seed yield potential for successive seed harvests unless the stand is optimally renovated. The objectives of this research are to determine the optimal post-harvest residue management methods to sustain seed yield potential, and to relate the timing of treatment application to treatment efficacy. Several residue management treatments have been used, including mowing, scalping, tillage, sod gapping, herbicide gapping, aerating, and power raking. Scalping was the superior treatment for residue management trials applied in 1992. For bentgrass, the vegetative regrowth period in late summer in western Canada is relatively short (1 Aug. to 15 Sept.), requiring timely post-harvest renovation operations. In 1992 and 1993, the residue management treatments were applied post-harvest (20 Aug. to 17 Sept.) but the late harvests in those years may have limited the efficacy of the residue management treatments. Based on seed yield data from the 1993 trial, selected residue management treatments will be included for continued research with an emphasis on the timing of residue management treatments at biweekly intervals from 1 Aug. to 15 Sept."
