Beard and James C Beard: | "This very rare, pioneering, comprehensive book on roadside development discusses design, construction, and maintenance of roadsides. It encompasses both turfgrasses and landscape plantings plus chapters on public utilities, comfort stations, bridges, and lighting. There is an appendix on state laws relating to roadsides. It is a unique book and the first one devoted to roadsides. It contains a detailed bibliography. Bennett's philosophy concerning roadside development was as follows:
The work as described in this book is not a matter of beautifying the highways as it is so often referred to, but is the business of developing the highways for the purpose of safely increasing their practical use and improving the roadsides to a degree where Nature can step in and make them beautiful." p. 176-177 |
