Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A short manual on the planting and care of lawns. It is practically oriented to home lawn enthusiasts and cool- season conditions in England. Mr. James described the concerns and approaches to sodding lawns in England in 1950:

When a lawn is required for almost immediate use, turfing is probably the speediest and most fool-proof method to adopt, but also the most expensive. The chief advantage is that the turfing season stretches over several months, when pressure of work is slackest, whereas seeding is confined to a few weeks in Spring and Autumn when there are so many other jobs to be done in the garden that time for sowing can ill be spared. One of the principal disadvantages of turfing (apart from cost) is the acute shortage of really good sods, and when purchasing any appreciable amount, inspection of the actual site from which they are to be cut will enable the gardener to determine whether the turf will suit his requirements. Old park or downland turf is generally the most suitable as the finer Bent and Fescue grasses usually predominate avoid at all costs turf that consists of coarse species; it is infinitely better to buy turves containing fine grass and weeds, the majority of which are susceptible to selective weedkillers, than to purchase weed-free turf composed of coarse grasses. Another good tip worth remembering is to choose turf from a similar type of soil to that of the site on which it is to be laid." p. 617-618
Beard Section Heading:Post-1950 general lawn and landscape books: Post-1950 general lawn books
Quotable quotes"Imprudent rolling in the past has most probably been the direct cause of more poor, weedy lawns than any other single factor affecting turf maintenance." p. 8
"There are still a surprisingly large number of gardeners who have not realized the amount of harm that can be done to a lawn by indiscriminately broadcasting dressings rich in calcareous matter, such as ground lime-stone, basic slag, hydrated lime or sea-sand with a high shell content." p. 21
