Abstract/Contents:"Ball bounce (BB) standards according to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) require rebound from 100-inch drop height to reach the minimum height of 80% observed on concrete. This predictive BB minimum is required for all tennis surfaces including grass courts. The 0.5 kg Clegg impact soil tester (CIST) for hardness (Gmax) is used to predict tennis BB. Some tennis court managers are experimenting with using the USGA TruFirm to assess surface firmness for tennis BB. However, TruFirm predictive value for tennis BB in comparison to CIST and BB standards are unknown. Our objective was to investigate the predictive value of TruFirm for tennis use for achieving minimum tennis BB standards. Three perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) courts were used over three years comparing BB, CIST and TruFirm. Regressions (correlations) were computed and compared to determine Gmax (CIST) and deformation depth (TruFirm) for achieving tennis BB standards of 80% concrete."
