Beard and James C Beard: | "A very rare, small book that is a must for collectors of historical turfgrass books. It addresses site preparation, establishment, and culture of turfgrasses for golf courses. The subjects are covered in a fairly detailed manner, including an early mention of the Rhizoctonia brown patch disease. The chapter subject topics addressed include the following:
- Turf Problems
- The Soil

- Weeds
- Turf Grasses
O.M.'s brother-in-law, Reverend Harvey Colburn, was the primary author of this book and other early Scotts publications. Within three years after this 1922 publication, O.M. Scott and Sons had sold seed to one out of every five golf courses in the United States, most of which was sold by mail order. Scotts imported and sold a blend of bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) seeds known as South German bentgrass, with the center of seed production being around Darmstadt, Germany, just southeast of Frankfurt. Five tons of seed was imported the first year, circa 1921. The historical approach of using a large number of grass species in a seed mixture versus a selected few species specifically adapted to the climatic, soil, and use conditions of a site was addressed in 1922:
In selecting seed, sacrificing quality is never a saving. The best seed proves the least expensive, for being free from impurities, it goes farther than cheap seed, produces a thicker, cleaner stand of grass and makes necessary a smaller expenditure for weed eradication. Only when one has several superior lots of seed to select from should price be made the basis of decision. Messrs. Piper and Oakley, to whom reference is made in the introduction, have added much to popular knowledge of the best varieties and their special adaptations, and so have greatly aided efficient buying. Through scientific study the fallacy of mysterious ready-made mixtures is now exposed. They serve no logical purpose, but instead, introduce undesirable grasses and add greatly to expense. In purchasing different varieties separately, one is better able to judge quality, to secure the desired proportions and to reduce the cost." p. 305-306 |
