Abstract/Contents:Studies were continued in Canada on the food preferences of Melanoplus bivittatus (Say), which is known from previous work to feed mainly on Cruciferae and Compositae but also on plants from other families. The object of the present feeding experiments was to assess the significance of single-plant and multiple-plant diets in the survival and development of Melanoplus nymphs. In the single-plant diets, seedlings of 30 species from 11 plant families were used, while the multiple-plant diets consisted of 2 or 3 each of these species, each test being run at 2 different temperatures. Flixweed (Descurainia sophia) proved to be an important component of both single and multiple diets, permitting high survival, rapid development and a high growth index; 2 other wild crucifers, 3 Compositae and 3 species from other families were also able to support complete development of the grasshopper. It was noted that survival was low and development was prolonged on barley and wheat, while no adults were produced on oats or Bromus inermis; this supports the findings of field observers that cereal crops are susceptible to damage by invading adults that have developed on more suitable food-plants in roadside ditches. Multiple-plant diets resulted in a higher survival rate, shorter development time and greater adult weight. Survival was lower, development faster and adult weight greater on multiple-plant diets at a rearing temperature of 28 deg C than at one of 21 deg C.
