Abstract/Contents:The reducing ability of roots of wheat, hemp, tall fescue, flax, maize, black mustard (Brassica nigra), pea, Italian ryegrass, Sudan grass, tobacco, sunflower and white clover was studied in pot culture by measuring 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol reduction. The value varied considerably between spp. although there was some similarity between spp. of the same family or same physiological type. A short period of excess water increased the reducing ability of spp. in which it was initially high but did not affect the others. Reducing ability was not related to excess water tolerance measured by growth and visual injury symptoms.
