Abstract/Contents:Trials with crops grown with PK on grey forest soil showed that the 3-yr av. uptake of N applied at 60 kg/ha by timothy and smooth brome grass was similar to the 5-yr av. uptake of N by crops grown in rotation of vetch + oats mixture/winter wheat/potatoes/barley/winter wheat, but when applied at 120-180 kg/ha N uptake was markedly higher by the grasses than by rotation crops. The difference was ascribed to the greater ability of the grasses than of rotation crops for N uptake especially the residual nitrate N from deeper soil layers.
