Abstract/Contents: | "Aspergillus fumigatus (AF) is an integral part of composting, regardless of the substrate or the organisms originally brought to the process, but not all compost is equal when it comes to the amount of AF contains. The following is a summary of current information on Aspergillus in composting to help us understand the risks it represents, while trying not to present value judgements for or against the practice. A 1994 study in New York showed no statistically significant link between the timing and concentration of airborne spores from the comoposting facility and the frequency of symptoms recorded by community members who participated in the study. There has been a great emphasis on getting numbers because science, in many ways, is all about proof through measurement. But now that we have numbers for AF, we don't know exactly what they mean. Future research may help provide a scale that tells safe frim dangerous levels." |
