Abstract/Contents:A long duration study was completed in the Column Root Assessment Facility to assess the inter- and intraspecific rooting potentials of 11 zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) genotypes under nonlimiting moisture conditions. There were no large inter- or intraspecies differences in rooting potential among the 11 Zoysia genotypes. Significant differences occurred in shoot dry weight and total root dry weight. The Zoysia genotypes are shallow rooted with limited potential to obtain moisture at soil depths below 12 inches (30 cm). The data confirmed earlier studies that suggested the primary mechanism contributing to drought resistance in these Zoysia genotypes is not dehydration avoidance through enhanced water uptake, but rather dehydration tolerance.
