Abstract/Contents:The National Turf Evaluation Program (NTEP) established a St. Augustinegrass Trial in 1989. Planting stock of commercial and experimental varieties was distributed from the national source in August 1989. The trial involves 24 entries, which includes 9 commercially available cultivars and 15 experimental lines. These trials provide information on adaptation and potential utility of the species as well as determining which cultivars are best adapted for regional use. At TAES-Dallas, emphasis is placed on cold-hardiness and general turf performance. Notes during 1991-1992 were made of seasonal turf quality, winter color retention, and spring greenup. Raleigh and Mercedes were among the most green of the commercial cultivars, consistent with the 1990 ratings. Seven entries, including FX-261 and Floralawn, had significantly less green cover than the other entries. Among the fastest commercial cultivars to green up were Jade, Sunclipse, and Mercedes. There were no statistically significant differences in turf cover among the entry means. Consistently higher turf quality was observed for Mercedes, Raleigh, the three MSA lines, and DALSA8401.
