Abstract/Contents: | "The primary objective of the 1990 sod survey was to establish production levels and product prices for Florida sod. In particular, key variables examined were area under production, area harvested, prices received for the major grass varieties, market outlets used in the sale of sod, and the extent of business diversification among Florida sod producers. Over 19,000 ha of turfgrass were in production in Florida during 1990 with over half produced by a few very large growers. While considerable in size, this latest reported value represented a large and rapid decline in produection sice 1987. By far the largest market outlet for Florida sod was through direct wholesale to landscape contractors (47%). Less frequently growers sold indirectly to brokers (16%) who acted as middlemen to landscape jobs and retail nurseries (9%). Direct retail sales to golf courses (8%) and homes (10)%) constituted the least market outlet activity. In response to the cost-price squeeze of recent years, Florida producers have reduced the amount (of) hectares in sod and cut back on sod sales. They have also circumvented traditional middlemen to help lower the transactions cost associated with selling their product. Finally, producers have adopted risk reducing strategies by diversifying into other agricultural commodity sectors, such as citrus, livestock, and vegetables." |
