Abstract/Contents: | A long term study was completed to assess the intraspecific rooting potentials of 11 St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) genotypes under nonlimitind moisture conditions. The intraspecies differences in rooting potential are very significant as regards depth of rooting, but not root density. Breeding for increased root depth appears possible in terms of the germplasm resources available. The long root length aids in drought resistance of St. Augustinegrass through a dehydration avoidance mechanism. |
