USGA Summary Points: | The top germination lines of Kentucky Bluegrass have been advanced for hybridization and selection in breeding plots at the WSU Grass Breeding and Ecology Farm. One hundred and seventy-six high germination lines of Kentucky Bluegrass with the highest seed yield have been subjected to salt tolerance screens with 60 surviving at a rate of 12 dS·m-1. All one hundred and seventy-six lines described above have been planted 'Matchless' a Kentucky Bluegrass variety selected for dryland production in Eastern WA without the use of postharvest burning was awarded Plant Variety Protection (PVP) status (PV #202200523) and is currently licensed and in production. Ninety-three Western Wheatgrass selections were planted as turf trials though none were successfully established, despite being previously selected for high germination. Given the failure of Western Wheatgrass for turf establishment, with the approval from USGA, we would like to shift this evaluation and breeding effort to the two progenitors of Western Wheatgrass, Streambank Wheatgrass and Beardless Wildrye, both native plants in the Pacific Northwest. We would also like to include a non-native wheatgrass, Intermediate Wheatgrass. These three plants still meet many of the research requests from Inland Empire Golf Course Superintendents. |
