Abstract/Contents:"Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the germination, of six crabgrass species in response to temperature, light, pH, and osmotic potential. Species included blanket (Digitarium serotina), India [D. longiflora (Retz.) Pers.], large [D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop.], smooth [D. ischaemum (Schreb. ex Schweig.) Schreb. ex Muhl.], southern [D. ciliaris (Retz.) Koel.], and tropical [D. bicornis (Lam.) Roem. & Schult. ex Loud.] crabgrasses. The effect of light was studied by placing seeds in petri dishes under complete darkness or continuous light in a growth chamber. Complete darkness was provided by wrapping two layers of aluminum foil around each petri dish. Petri dishes were incubated at 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 C to study temperature effects. Seeds were incubated at 30 C at pH 4, 6, 8, and 10. Aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with an average molecular wt. of 400 g was prepared with osmotic potentials of 0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, and -0.8 MPa with deionized water alone used as a control. Petri dishes were checked weekly for germination number with percentages for each treatment calculated for 28 days. A randomized study in a factorial arrangement with four replicates per treatment was used and all trials were repeated. Data for all studies was subjected to analysis of variance to test for individual factor effects and interactions. Crabgrass species germinated between all temperatures studied with optimal germination occurring at 25 or 30 C in 24h continuous light. Under continuous light, southern and tropical had 80% or better germination between 20 and 35 C; whereas germination for large, smooth, and blanket crabgrass was 60% at these temperatures. At 15 C 40% germination was observed for all species. Under the continuous dark treatment, all species germinated at all temperatures but averaged 60% when compared to the continuous light treatment. Seed germination was observed among all water potential treatments. However, germination was reduced up to 70% at water potentials from -0.4 to -0.8 MPa for all species except India crabgrass. India had little or no germination while tropical crabgrass germination ranged from 40% to 86% at all water potential treatments. Germination was not significantly different among pH levels within any given grabgrass species. Large, south, and tropical germination ranged from 50% to 86% while blanket, India, and smooth ranged from 0% to 30% at all pH tested. Little or no germination was obtained with India crabgrass. Overall crabgrass species germinated over a wide range of conditions, explaining its ability to survive and persist in many different environments. India crabgrass had little or no germination under these environmental conditions, possibly due to a dormancy mechanism. The biological information from these studies should be beneficial for devising effective control measures. Future research should look at the effect of alternate temperatures, effects of light quality, seed longevity, effect of planting depth on emergence seedlings, and to determine low germination of India crabgrass."
