Abstract/Contents:"Golf courses on dune sand (links) have many advantages over inland courses. Coastal areas for the development of such courses are in great demand. At first sight, construction of links courses appears an attractive option because there are usually no drainage problems, and no need for an elaborate USGA specification incorporating a perched water table over a gravel carpet such as would be necessary on most inland courses. Instead, materials for the construction of links greens and tees are all on site. However, what appears to be simple, cheap and straightforward can be fraught with problems. These are: lack of organic matter, sand blow, drought, leaching of nutrients and general grass establishment problems. Because of local climatic and environmental conditions, these problems vary in importance from course to course, though most are common to all links."
