Abstract/Contents:"USGA has established guidelines for greens construction. Their recommendations call for a three layered stratification of an 85-90% sand, 1 to 5% peat, not more than 5% silt and not more than 3% clay overlying layers of coarse sand and gravel. This system promotes water retention and reduces loss of water through leaching. Athletic fields constructed according to the PAT (Prescription Athletic Turf) system are composed of sand and peat underlain by an impermeable barrier. This system allows for the rapid removal of water under excess rainfall conditions, but in most cases water and nutrient management on a daily basis for healthy turfgrass production is a challenge. The similarities and differences in these two turfgrass production systems will be discussed relative to their overall fertilization requirements."
