Abstract/Contents:"Ground ivy (creeping charlie, gill-over-the ground) is considered a difficult weed to control in Wisconsin home lawns. This study was conducted to evaluate commercially available and alternative materials for postemergence ground ivy control. Results from spring applications made to coincide with full bloom indicate a potential timing effect. The data indicate that single standard rate applications of 2,4-D low volatile ester (Weedone LV4) and amine (Weedone amine) provide almost complete control. Additionally, premix conbinations such as Confront and Triplet also were effective. Nonselective herbicides such as Sharpshooter, a potassium salt of a long-chain fatty acid, and Finale were not effective. In contrast to reports from Dr. Nick Christians at Iowa State University, Borax (utilized to exploit the boron sensitivity of ground ivy) applied at the 8 oz. rate was no effiective in our study. The second rating date is an indication of the ability of the plant to creep into adjacent plots. This creates a unique control problem, when a neighboring property owner chooses not to control their stand of ground ivy."
