Abstract/Contents:"Plots were established on two golf course fairways with a history of take-all patch (caused by the fungus Gaeumannomyces Graminis). With the exception of fertilizers and fungicides, the plots were maintained by the superintendents similar to the rest of the course. Soil pH dropped a one-half unit (from 7 to 6.3-6.6) in the first 0.5 inch of all fertilizer plots at the Milwaukee site. At the Kohler site, soil pH in plots treated with fertilizer plus sulfur dropped in the first 1/2 inch by nearly 1.5 pH units (from 7 to 5.5-5.7) but not when treated with ammonium sulfate alone. Soil pH at one inch or greater did not change or increased slightly from all fertilizer treatments. Soil pH of 6.0 or less is low enough to suppress the take-all fungus should it become active (Goss and Gould, 1967. Agron. J. 59:149). However this season no symptoms of take-all were apparent inside the plots during the season. No artificial inoculation with the take-all fungus was attempted this year. The single application of either Banner or Bayleton in Spring controlled dollar spot symptoms to just a trace, compared to the moderate amount of infection that developed on untreated plots in August."
