Abstract/Contents:"Research over the last two decades has demonstrated the effects of variations in nutrition on the growth pattern, wear tolerance and persistence of turfgrasses. Whilst it may be possible to exploit some of these observations to the benefit of turfgrass performance, the traditional practices of fertilizer use on sports turf in Britain do not lend themselves to subtle modification. Paramount amongst these traditions is the use of spring/summer and winter fertilizers with their rather standardized formulations. By way of background, a brief review is given of the differences between very sandy soils and natural soils, with respect to the behaviour of nitrogen (as ammonium or nitrate) phosphorus and potassium. Next, the adoption of a concept new to sports turf nutrition is recommended, namely that nitrogen is given the role of the single growth-controlling nutrient whilst all other nutrients are maintained at adequate but not excessive levels and do not control growth. Guidelines are given for the practical implementation of this approach. It is also recommended that soil-available levels of phosphorus, potasssium and magnesium should be monitored regularly to identify upward or downward trends."
