Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate herbicide combinations for control of Virginia buttonweed. All field experiments were conducted on natural infestations of Virginia buttonweed. Experiments one and two were conducted to evaluate combinations of 2,4-D (amine) + metsulfuron. The design was a randomized complete block with a factorial arrangement of 2,4-D rates ranging from 0 to 1.0 lb ae/A in 0.25 lb increments and metsulfuron rates ranging from 0 to 1.0 oz pr/A in 0.25 oz increments. Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and field (Canton and Columbus). In the first greenhouse experiment at 6 weeks after treatment (WAT), 90% control of Virginia buttonweed was provided with a combination of 0.50 oz/A metsulfuron and 0.25 lb/A 2,4-D. Fresh weights of Virginia buttonweed were reduced with all the treatments compared to the untreated. However, 0.50 oz/A metsulfuron alone provided fresh weight reduction equivalent to any combination of metsulfuron and 2,4-D. In the second greenhouse experiment, the only treatment to provide 80% control was a combination of 1.0 oz/A metsulfuron + 1.0 lb/A 2,4-D at 6 WAT. Fresh weights were similar to those observed in the first experiment, with 0.50 oz/A metsulfuron providing fresh weight reduction equivalent to all combinations of metsulfuron and 2,4-D. In the field experiment, all combinations of 0.50 oz/A metsulfuron + 0.25 lb/A 2,D [2,4-D] provided equivalent control at 2 and 3 WAT. At 5 WAT, only a combination of 0.50 oz/A metsulfuron + 0.75 lb/A 2,4-D provided 80% control. At 8 WAT, control of Virginia buttonweed was 80%. Experiment 3 was conducted near Canton, to evaluate the repeated use of hormone herbicide mixtures. The experiment was initiated in 1992 and all treatments were applied to the same plots in 1993. Plots were treated each year in June and repeated when Virginia buttonweed densities were 25%. Treatments in this experiment included three-way mixtures of 2,4-D + diclorprop + dicamba (0.75 + 0.75 + 0.18 lb ae/A) or 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba (0.76 + 0.40 + 0.08 lb ae/A), and two way mixtures of 2,4-D + dichloprop (0.7 + 0.7 lb/A) or 2,4-D + dichloprop (0.7 + 0.7 lb/A). In 1992, all treatments reduced Virginia buttonweed densities compared to the untreated. However, a second application of all four treatments was required 5 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT). By mid-October, all of the treatments reduced Virginia buttonweed densities below 20%. At the resumption of the experiment in 1993, all treated plots reduced Virginia buttonweed densities compared to the untreated. One application of the three-way mixtures in late June was sufficient to suppress Virginia buttonweed densities below 20% season long. However, a second application of the two-way mixtures was required at 5 WAIT to suppress densities below 30% for the remainder of the growing season."
