Abstract/Contents:"Controlling winter annual weeds with herbicides along highway right-of-ways is a major component of the Oklahoma Dapartment of Transportation's (ODOT) roadside vegetation management program. For the past several years, atrazine has been the most commonly used herbicide by ODOT for annual weed control. Environmental and groundwater concerns resulted in a recent temporary loss of atrazine for roadside use and now its future for that purpose may be uncertain. As a result, research efforts are being focused on finding an economical alternative with a similar weed control spectrum. A field study was initiated in central Oklahoma near Stillwater during 1993 to evaluate the efficacy of several herbicide treatments, alone and in combination with ammonium sulfate (AMS), for the selective control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in dormant roadside bermudagrass turf. Atrazine was applied 16 March with remaining treatments applied 5 April. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. The following treatments were used alone and in combination with 3.4 lbs. pf AMS per acre: Campaign (glyphosate + 2,4-D) at 32 (0.3 + 0.48), 48 (0.45 + 0.71) and 64 (0.6 + 0.95) oz. product lbs. a.i./A ; Roundup (glyphosate) + 2,4-D (dimethylamine salt) at 0.25 + 0.50 lb. ai/A, 0.38 + 0.75 lb. ai/A and 0.50 + 1.0 lb. ai/A; and Aatrex 4L (atrazine) at 2.0 lbs. ai./A. All treatments of Roundup + 2,4-D had X-77 surfactant added at a rate of 0.5% v/v. Treatments were applied to 5 feet by 10 feet plots using a CO2-powered, hand-held boom sprayer equipped with 80015 stainless steel flat-fan spray tips applying a carrier rate of 20 GPA. Visual ratings were made at 1, 2 and 3 months after treatment (MAT) for control of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds and bermudagrass phytotoxicity. Winter annual broadleaf weed control was improved by the addition of AMS to all Campaign treatments when compared to equivalent treatments of Campaign alone, however, differences were not statistically significant (P<=0.05). The greatest increase in efficacy occurred with the low rate of Campaign (32 oz./A) for all three evaluation dates. Although AMS added to all combination treatments of Roundup + 2,4-D amine also increased the level of broadleaf weed control, the effect was not statistically significant at the P<= 0.05 level. The addition of AMS to atrazine did not improve the level of broadleaf weed control. The greatest increase in efficacy from the addition of AMS to a particular herbicide treatment was observed in the ratings for winter annual grass control. AMS significantly (P<=0.05) improved winter annual grass control from Campaign at the 32 oz./A rate as well as from Roundup + 2,4-D at the lowest rate. Throughout the duration of this experiment, no bermudagrass phytotoxocity was observed in any plot."
