| Abstract/Contents: | "Playing quality of sports turf is of fundamental importance, however much of sports turf research has been concerned with properties of turf which are not directly related to play. In this paper, literature relating to the playing quality of sports surfaces is reviewed. The review is mainly concerned with research on natural turf although work on synthetic turf and other surfaces is referred to where necessary. Test equipment and methods used for the measurement of the most important playing characteristics (ball bounce resilience, rolling resistance, surface friction and spin, friction and traction, stiffness and resilience) are described and results from published and unpublished work are summarized. Several researchers have proposed maximum or minimum limits for some of the playing characteristics for various sports, for reasons of safety or quality of play, and these proposals are also discussed." |
