Abstract/Contents:"Research was performed to evaluate sequential year applications of several plant growth retardants (PGR's) for bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) suppression. Treatments included glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, sethoxydim, ethofumesatae, quinclorac, sulfometuron methyl, maleic hydroxide, trinexapac-ethyl, Cadre, Cadre + imazaquin, and imazethapyr + an imazapyr mixture. All treatments were applied in three consecutive years except the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture and the Cadre treatments (Cadre and Cadre + imazaquin) which were applied two years and one year, respectively. All treatments were applied once per year excludin the Cadre and Cadre + imazaquin treatments which were applied as two sequential treatments. Data collected included seedhead counts (number m-2), bahiagrass density (0-100%), plant height (cm), and phytotoxicity (1 to 10 with 5.0 being the minimum acceptable level). Glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, sethoxydim, sulfometuron methyl, maelic hydroxide, trinexapac-ethyl at 0.71 lb/A (2EC), Cadre, Cadre + imazaquin and the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture provided total seedhead suppression through 10 weeks after treatment (WAT). Trinexapac-ethyl at 0.36 lb/A (1EC), 0.54 lb/A (2EC), 0.68 lb/A (2EC) 0.89 lb/A (2EC) provided >=64% bahiagrass seedhead suppression during the time. Bahiagrass density 10 WAT was >=64% following treatments of glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, sethoxydim, quinclorac, sulfometuron methyl, maleic hydrazide, and the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture. Density was the greatest (73%) at this time for sethoxydim and sulfometuron methyl treatments. Cadre-containing treatments reduced density to levels below 73%. Plant height at 10 WAT was reduced >=35% compared to the control by glyphosate, sulfometuron methyl, trinexapac-ethyl and the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture. All Cadre and Cadre + imazaquin treatments reduced plant height >50% at 10 WAT. Glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, sulfometuron methyl [,] maleic hydrazide and the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture had unacceptable (<5.0) phytotoxicity ratings at 4 WAT. By 10 WAT, only the imazethapyr + imazapyr mixture resulted in unacceptable phytotxicity. Phytotoxicity also was unacceptable for all Cadre-containing treatments except the combination of Cadre 0.016 lb ai/A + imazaquin 0.19 lb/A. Glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, and sulfometuron methyl provided most effective seedhead suppression and height reduction without significant losses in density and turf color at 10 WAT. The Cadre and Cadre + imazaquin treatments suppressed seedhead production and plant height but also resulted in unacceptable phytotoxicity levels and density loss. Turf for all treatments had recovered by 16 WAT."
