Abstract/Contents:"Greenhouse experiments were established in 1992 to determine if an Italian ryegrass population had been selected over time to be resistant to Oust. Seed were collected from the suspected population and treated PRE and POST in the greenhouse with 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 oz pr/A Oust. This population was resistant to all rates of Oust. Previous research has shown that Italian ryegrass on roadsides in Mississippi could be controlled consistently with 0.5 oz pr/A Oust. Field experiments were established in 1992 and 1993 at the resistant biotype location to evaluate alternative herbicides for control. PRE/EPOT applications made in November 1992 were 0.25 to 0.75 lb ai/A Lexone, 2 to 4 lb ai/A Hyvar, 1.6 lb ai/A Karmex, 0.5 to 0.75 lb ai/A Velpar, 1 to 4 lb pr/A Krovar I, or 1.75 oz/A Oust followed by 48 oz pr/A Campaign in February. POST applications applied in February 1993 were 0.0625 to 0.25 lb ai/A Assure II. 0.125 lb/A Assure II + 1.6 lb/A Karmex, 0.125 lb/A Assure II + 0.25 or 0.5 lb/A Velpar, 0.125 lb/A Assure II + 1.5 lb ae/A 2,4-D, 48 oz/A Campaign or 1.75 to 3.5 oz/A Oust. With the PRE/EPOT experiment at 4 months after initial treatment (MAIT), Karmex, 4lb/A Hyvar, 0.75 lb/A Velpar, and 2 lb/A Krovar I resulted in 80% control of the Oust-resistant biotype. By 6 MAIT, only 4 lb/A Krovar I provided 80% control. Karmex at 1.6 lb/A was the only other treatment resulting in control not significantly different from 4 lb/A Krovar I; however, control was only 65%. Other treatments controlled 50% of the Oust-resistant biotype. Because there were relatively few other weeds in this experiment, bermudagrass density ratings appear to be correlated to Italian ryegrass control. At 6 MAIT, the greatest bermudagrass density was noted following 4 lb/A Krovar I (55%). The only other treatments resulting in similar bermudagrass density were 0.75 lb/A Velpar (45%), 2 lb/A Krovar I (48%) or 1.6 lb/A Karmex (48%). All other treatments resulted in 38% bermudagrass density, while the check resulted in 20% density. With the POST treatments, no control was noted with 3.5 oz/A Oust. At 2 and 3 MAT (months after treatment), 0.0625 lb/A Assure II or 0.125 lb/A Assure II + Karmex or Velpar resulted in 80% control of the Oust resistant biotype. Control of this biotype with Assure II was antagonized by the addition of 2,4-D. Campaign at 48 oz/A resulted in 50 and 25% control at 2 and 3 MAT, respectively. At 2 and 3 MAT, Assure II + Karmex resu;lted in the greatest bermudagrass density (48 and 58% respectively). At 2 MAT, 0.125 lb/A Assure II + 0.5 lb/A Velpar resulted in 40% bermudagrass density which was comparable to the best treatment. At 3 MAT, 0.0625 to 0.25 lb/A Assure II alone or 0.125 lb/A Assure II + Velpar resulted in 48 to 53% bermudagrass density, equivalent to the best treatment."
