Abstract/Contents:"To effectively assess the potential impacts of crop protection chemicals, it is important to determine the gradient of ecological responses over a range of possible exposure scenarios. Outdoor aquatic microcosms were sprayed with the organophosphorous insecticide chlorpyrifos to simulate off-target drift of 0.05% to 5% of a 1.12 kg Al/ha application rate (nominal water concentrations between 0.03 and 3(micro)g/L). The exposure-response relationships for plants, invertebrates, and fish were determined. Few significant ecological effects occurred at treatment levels corresponding to nominal chlorypyrifos concentrations of 0.03 or 0.1 (micro)g/L. Treatment at 0.3 (micro)g/L caused temporary reductions in many groups of invertebrates but fish were unaffected. Treatment at 1 (micro)g/L caused temporary, but longer lasting effects on invertebrates; slight decreases in fish mean length and total biomass were noted, whereas no impact on fish survival, mean weight, and biomass increase occurreed. The 3 (micro)g/L treatment caused persistent efffects on nearly all invertebrate taxa an significantly reduced fish survival."
