Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted to evaluate Horizon 2000 for POST johnsongrass control and bermudagrass and bahiagrass tolerance on highway rights-of-way in Mississippi. All herbicides were applied as a single or sequential application (1 mo after the initial treatment). Herbicide rates for the single treatment were 0.188, 0.20, 0.22 and 0.24 lb ai/A Horizon 2000, 0.188 lb ai/A Fusilade 2000, and 3.3 lb ai/A MSMA. Crop oil concentrate was added to all Horizon 2000 and Fusilade 2000 treatments at 0.25% (v/v). Surfactant was added to the MSMA treatment at 0.25% (v/v). Johnsongrass control ranged from 70 to 73% with 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 27 d after treatment (DAT). MSMA at 3.3 lb/A produced 90% control. At 40 DAT, johnsongrass control was 88 to 90% with 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000. At 20 DAT, 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 injured bermudagrass 40%. Injury from 0.188 lb/A Fusilade was comparable to Horizon 2000. MSMA did not injure bermudagrass. At 20 DAT bahiagrass injury was 60% with 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 and 0.188 lb/A Fusilade 2000. MSMA injury to bahiagrass was comparable to 0.20 lb/A Horizon 2000 thru 40 DAT. Seedhead suppression was 90% with 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 and 0.188 lb/A Fusilade 2000, compared to 63% with 3.3 lb/A MSMA. Herbicide rates for comparing single vs sequential treatments were 0.188, 0.188 + 0.188 and 0.188 + 0.12 lb/A Horizon 2000 at the 20-in growth stage. Herbicide rates at the 38-in growth stage were 0.188 and 0.188 + 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000. Crop oil concentrate was added to all Horizon 2000 treatments at 0.25% (v/v). At 57 days after initial treatment (DAIT), 0.188 + 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 controlled 38-in johnsongrass 60%. Horizon 2000 at 0.188 + 0.188 or 0.188 + 0.12 lb/A controlled 20-in johnsongrass 90% 40 DAIT. At 57 DAIT, injury to bermudagrass was 15% when 0.188 or 0.188 + 0.188 lb/A Horizon 2000 was applied to 38-in johnsongrass. At 20 DAIT, 0.188, 0.188 + 0.188 and 0.188 + 0.12 lb/A Horizon 2000 injured bermudagrass 40% when applied to 20-in johnsongrass. All treatments caused 90% seedhead suppression at 57 DAIT."
