Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the effect of surfactant rate on control of Virginia buttonweed located near Canton, MS. The experimental design was an RCB with a factorial arrangement of herbicides. A nonionic surfactant (X-77 Spreader) was applied at rates of 0, 0.25, or 0.50% (v:v). Herbicide treatments included: triclopyr amine (0.25 lb ae/A), triclopyr ester (0.25 lb ae/A), fluroxypyr (0.128 lb ae/A), clopyralid (0.25 lb ae/A), dicamba (0.25 lb ae/A), or 2,4-D amine (1.0 lb ae/A). Herbicides were applied with a nonionic surfactant at rates of 0.25 or 0.50%, by volume, or without surfactant. In 1992, at 3 weeks after treatment (WAT), the addition of surfactant to clopyralid, dicamba, 2,4-D, fluroxypyr, and triclopyr ester increased control of Virginia buttonweed compared to treatments with no surfactant. However, the addition of any rate of surfactant to trichlopyr amine decreased control compared to the no surfactant treatment. At 4 WAT, the addition of surfactant to 2,4-D increased control from 0 to 80%. The addition of surfactant to triclopyr ester or amine decreased control. At 5 WAT, only trichlopyr amine was less effective with the addition of surfactant. By 7 WAT, chlopyralid, fluoxypyr, and 2,4-D provided 80% control of Virginia buttonweed with the addition of 0.25% surfactant, compared to no control without surfactant. In 1993, surfactant did not increase control over the no surfactant treatments at 3 WAT. At 4 WAT, the same effects were observed except that the addition of 0.50% surfactant to chlopyralid caused a decrease in control. At 5 and 7 WAT, the addition of 0.25% surfactant did not increase control with triclopyr ester, fluroxypyr, or 2,4-D. However, the addition of 0.25% surfactant to trichlopyr amine or 0.50% to clopyralid decreased control compared to the no surfactant treatments."
