| Abstract/Contents: | "The various mixtures showed, during a period of four years (1990-1994), a considerable and varied change of their botanical composition. 1. The variant Weihenstephan developed very quickly a balanced proportion of grasses, herbs and legumes (35:20:45) and the whole population comprised, from the very beginning a variety of perennial species. Even after a period of four years, the species do not show any significant limitations. 2. If the mixture sown comprises many annual and superannuated species, a considerable change is to be expected already in the first year after sowing. 3. Individually dominating herb or legume species which last for years, as well as species which disappear after a short while to be replaced by populations rich in grass species, prevent the development of a many-coloured flowering aspect. 4. It seems that even after an inharmonious composition in the beginning that there is still the possibility of the gradual development of an attractive many-coloured population. The composition of the mixture sown is the basic condition for the development of a meadow rich in many-coloured flowers. When judging the criteria it should be kept im [in] mind that the botanical composition of the populations may still change over a period of several years." A chart showing the species of grasses which comprise Weihenstephan, and the various colors of their blossoms is given in table 4 (Abbildung 4). |
