Abstract/Contents:"Contrary to what many people think, getting rid of mowed grass and replacing it with ground covers, mulches and wildflowers will not reduce landscape maintenance. My extensive studies (Dr. Don Williams, professor of ornamental horticulture and landscape design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville) document that mowed grass does not deserve its 'high maintenance' label and in fact, other forms of ground cover will almost always require more maintenance than lawns. Based on his 'maintenance time per unit area' calculations, both homeowners and commercial landscape managers can save time and money when relying on turfgrass for their low maintenance areas, espcially when compared to ground covers, mulches and wildflowers."
