Abstract/Contents: | "Sound cultural practices and a preventative fungicide spray program are important components of Pythium control, but understanding the pathogen's life cycle and the environmental factors that trigger infection are equally important." Pythium requires heat and moisture to break its dormancy and become active; for this reason, Pythium outbreaks occur most often when the weather is hot, with a high relative humidity. Other factors that contribute to an infection are wet grass, cloudy weather, densely seeded stands, alkaline soils, and high levels of nitrogen. Cultural methods may be used to lessen the risk of Pythium, and they are given, along with a suggested list of fungicides. A good rule to follow is the so called "150 rule". Whenever the sum of the temperature (degrees F) and relative humidity add up to 150 or more a disease outbreak is likely. |
