| Abstract/Contents: | The objectives of this experiment were to compare three experimentals (SYN-1-88, SYN3-88 or Crenshaw, and SYN-4-88 or Cato) with two industry standards (Penncross and Pennlinks) for (a) performance during the summer months, (b) disease and insect tolerances, (c) root growth and water extraction patterns in the summer months, and (d) to investigate cultural requirements. To define appropriate cultural regimes, two nitrogen (N) fertility programs and two fungicide programs (preventative and curative) were included for each species. Crenshaw and Cato maintained a higher quality turf than Penncross on 50 and 35%, respectively, of the ratings. Crenshaw demonstrated very high susceptibility to dollar spot infection compared to Penncross on all ratings under the curative fungicide program. The shoot, root, and water extraction data for Crenshaw and Cato in late summer under high N indicates that these cultivars are able to functions better under summer stresses in conjunction with high N required for a high quality/high play golf course. |
