| Abstract/Contents: | "Seven endangered wild field herbs were sown in an experiment to test the effect of cooling, darkening and additionally sown cereals (Getreidebeisaat) on the rate of germination. It was only Camelina microcarpa of which a high percentage germinated, and this applied to all the variants. The seed of Adonis flammea, Bupleurum rotundifolium, Conringia orientalis, Consolida regalis, Kickxia spuria, and Papaver argemone remained dormant when exposed to light, but this situation changed, when darkened. As far as Bupleurum rotundifolium, Consolida regalis, and Papaver argemone were concerned, the dormancy breaking effect of darkening was replaced by a procedure which cooled the seed down to +2 degrees C for a period of six weeks. Kickxia spuria germinated only sufficiently well when sown in the field and darkening was applied. No significantly different results were obtained when cereals were sown in addition. It even resulted in a slightly diminished rate of germination in the case of Kickxia spuria. Following these results it is recommended when extensively worked field edges are concerned not to work the stubble in order to protect the diaspora bank of wild herbs which should be protected." |
