Abstract/Contents:An analytical report on a research project carried out by the NZ Turf Culture Institute on synthetic and natural turf greens in New Zealand between 1991 and 1993. The project addressed two fundamental technical issues: 1) How does the introduction of synthetic greens change the playing quality characteristics of the game for those clubs used to playing on a natural surface? 2) What is the standard of a synthetic green distinguishing a 'good' installation from a 'bad' one? Overall, the results suggested that there was little difference in pace between cotula and synthetic greens. The survey concluded that there was acceptance of synthetic greens in New Zealand, but that there was a proportion of bowlers for whom synthetic greens were not acceptable. It was felt that synthetic greens were therefore best seen as a complementary surface to natural greens, not as total replacement.
