Abstract/Contents:The virtues and shortcomings of two soil bed constructions are compared, those of the system using a draining layer (Drainschicht) and of those employing a close to the surface draining slit (Drainschlitz). Unlike the immediate vertical drainage of a system with a draining layer, the close to the surface system (bodennahe Bauweise) drains first horizontally, guiding the water to a slit, then draining it vertically. This allows for better retention of nutrients, as well as requiring less amounts of water to irrigate the turf surface. Furthermore, the drain slits allow for capillary flow of water to the grass roots unlike the draining layer system, which aims for immeadiate and permanent removal of surface water. Lastly, the costs for installing a close to the surface system are far less than those for the draining layer.
