Abstract/Contents:"European cranefly, Tipula paludosa Meigen, has been the main insect problem of turfgrass west of the Cascades in the state of Washington for almost thirty years. The larval stage causes the damage by feeding on turfgrass roots and crowns in the thatch layer and near the soil surface. Insecticides have been successful in controlling larval populations, but biorational controls are under investigation. These biorationals include: Turplex, a neem extract, and two nematode species, Steinernema carpocapse and Steinernema feltiae. These methods were compared to a standard insecticide treatment of chlorpyrifos, (Dursban DTI), and no treatment. Along with biorationals which are more environmentally friendly, an effort is also being made to conserve water in low maintenance areas by investigating the use of buffalograss in selected part of Washington." Discusses stolon length, percent green and mean quality ratings for the Yakima plots.
