Abstract/Contents:If not properly maintained, the water in an irrigation pond will rapidly promote algae growth, transforming a once valuable water resource into a useless, foul smelling moat, that harms not merely the irrigation system, but some of the more delicate turf grasses as well. Several commonly employed methods to improve water quality aid only the symptoms of this problem, but not the source of the problem itself. Dredging, applying algea eating fish or chemicals and other such maintenance methods are neither natural nor effective, and both are highly expensive. Aeration however, is an entirely natural process that betters water quality by its increased water circulation, cooling the water surface, thereby decreasing nitrate levels and hindering algae growth. Such aerators are not to be confused with similar looking fountains, fountains serve a purely aesthetic function, aerators promote higher water purity, and are both inexpensive and easy to install.
