| Abstract/Contents: | This section of the article deals with unwanted grasses on sports turf surfaces and golf courses. Outlining the various laws (Germany) that govern the use of chemical herbicides, along with the legal standards set for plant and water protection, the harmful effects of foreign grasses are listed, along with a chart of the most common foreign grasses, stating their growth and resistance rates. As massive amounts of herbicides damage water resources, a more restrained method of application is required, meaning that more kinds of foreign grasses need and should be tolerated. Knowledge as to the exact kinds of foreign grasses that infest a turf surface can determine whether or not the grass will in any way damage the turf or reduce playing quality, and if a herbicide need even be used against it at all. Proposing percentages of foreign grasses that should be tolerated on various sports and golf turf surfaces, and measures are suggested to hinder the establishment of such grasses, both preventive and active, mechanical and chemical. |
