| Abstract/Contents: | "Extensive greens on roofs can be described as follows, according to existence and manner of establishment: Spontaneous extensively appearing greens as natural or initiated vegetational settlements; Intensively growing greens as a result of vegetation techniques. The safest greens are extensive greens as a result of vegetation techniques. These greens are planned by taking the sites concerned into consideration and are then established by applying safe vegetation-technical methods, meeting at the same time all the aspects related to the building by-laws and security regulations." Due to the extreme conditions that a roof top offers, very careful planning of both the soil construction and the kinds of grasses planted is of utmost importance. A variety of living conditions within an area promotes a high degree of bio- diversity. Conversly, the more the living contitions of a certain biotope decrease below its optimal levels the lesser the bio-diversity of that area will be. It can be concluded that varying the construction of a roof top turf soil bed, that is not uniformly one thickness, will augment the chances for aesthetically pleasing end results. |
