| Abstract/Contents: | Current management of phytoparasitic nematodes on turfgrass relies on multiple applications of organophosphate pesticides for short lived (< 4 weeks) suppression. Reports on research is being conducted on the newly discovered species of oblate, sting nematode endoparasitic bacterium called Pasteuria (S-1). The bacterium infest the sting nematode and fill it with developing endospores which are then released upon host disintegration. "The assets of Pasteuria as a biological control agent of sting nematode are; 1) its ability to persist for long periods of time (> 1 year), 2) host specificity, 3) compatibility with pesticides, and 4) lack of environmental risk to humans and other non-targets. The major drawback is the lack of a mass culture method. We are currently looking for other, more virulent isolates of Pasteuria and other antagonists of the sting nematode in Florida." |
