Abstract/Contents:Describes three types of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer and how each one works to release its nitrogen over a period of time. Ureaformaldehyde products are insoluble and widely used and depend on microbial activity for product breakdown and nutrient release. Isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) is sparingly soluble and is not affected by soil temperature. Diffusion membrane materials (Osmocote R) are controlled by soil temperature for nutrient release. Biodegradable coatings such as sulfur coated urea depend on soil moisture, temperature and microbial activity to release nutrients. Comparisons of these three slow-release N types are also provided.
