Abstract/Contents:"With a commitment to achieve 50 percent diversion or more by the year 2000, the Town of Markham, Ontario, initiated a Model Community Demonstration Project (MCDP) in May, 1994. The project ran until April 1995 and was designed to include all the elements Markham considered critical to maximized diversion - 3Rs education, aggressive backyard composting and grass cycling promotion, curbside collection of an expanded range of recyclable materials, curbside collection of kitchen and yard organics for composting at a central facility and the use of an appropriate three stream collection vehicle to accommodate dry recyclables, organics and garbage." Discusses participation and diversion rates, capture rates for designated materials, material processing, model families, public reaction and the town's next steps.
