Abstract/Contents: | "Although some people have been composting leaves, grass and other organics in their backyards for years, coordinating efforts to promote the practice are just starting to emerge. 'Encouraging home composting helps the industry as a whole. When homeowners are more educated about the value and uses of compost, the concept of a larger composting facility as well as the end product itself are more marketable.'" Discusses the significance of backyard composting and presents the results of a study conducted in the U.S. and portions of Canada on existing backyard composting education programs. Stresses the necessity to develop a training program and educational materials for local governments, cooprative extension, community activists and other educators to promote backyard composting. Includes contact information for cosponsoring a training workshop or providing other kinds of support. |
