Abstract/Contents:Using the sands found in southern Bavaria as an example, the general physical properties of sand particles are described. Particular attention is paid to the possible arrangements of sand granules of identical size, and how these arrangements affect the pore space. Variants range between 30-50%. The capillary capacity of these sand particle arrangements are the discussed using the formula h=0,297/d (cm) to measure the height of capillary action (kapillare Steighöhe). Next follows an examination of the effects some arrangements of sand particles have on water permeability, where it is concluded that coarse sand has greater permeability than fine sand. There does not appear to be any direct correlation though between water carrying capacity and water permeability. The pH levels, as well as the lime content of sample sands from southern Bavaria are then described. It is demonstrated that the pH levels of sands with lime are determined by factors other than the lime content or from the kind of lime found in the sand. Subsequent important chemical properties are then outlined, the various effects that weather has upon sands of differing lime content are described, and the possible used for lime sands in the turfgrass industry are outlined.
