Abstract/Contents:Although the use of sand in the construction of a turf sports ground has become the accepted norm, its presence in a soil sets off a series of chemical reactions in the soil which then need be countered by the greenkeeper. That, coupled with its high cost, raise the issue of searching for alternative substances of an organic or organic/synthetic nature that can work as well if not better than the traditional sands now employed. "... The alternatives...besides the well known synthetic foam products, are mostly recycling products consisting of tree bark, garbage compost and sewage sludge. ..." These varying options are discussed, and accompianing tables diagram their composition, their physical and chemical properties as well as their biological activity. The proper application of these substances proves to usually improve certain desirable qualities in the soil, while at worst not effecting much of a positive change at all. However, as not much research has been performed to determine their exact effects, caution is urged, as comprehensive knowledge of the chemical and physical propertes of soils is required to insure that only the desired effects are attained through the use of these materials. Some model soil constructions are given , along with an explanation of its composition and the benefits that particular model brings.
