Abstract/Contents:"The pitches at 28 professional soccer clubs were monitored to examine variation in turf quality in heavily shaded and relatively unshaded parts of the playing surface. On average total grass cover in the more shaded wing areas was 5.2 percentage points lower than on corresponding parts of the pitch where shade was less of a problem. This difference was greater in pitches where differences in shade patterns were more pronounced. Small differences between shaded and unshaded areas were also recorded for soil temperature and traction, i.e. turf strength. There was a strong tendency for divots of turf to be removed in heavily shaded areas and this is assumed to result from shallow rooting. Strategies for stadium design and pitch management are disussed in relation to the problems of shade and microclimate."
