Abstract/Contents: | "Most frequently, damage to turf grasses from atmospheric pollutants occurs in or near large centres of population, since there industry and automobile density is usually greatest. However, pollutants can be transported large distances by the wind from heavy industrial areas e.g. in northwestern Europe, the industrial heartlands of Britain, the Michigan/Ohio and New York regions of the U.S.A. and Southern Ontario in Canada to affect plants (and animals) in regions remote from their production source. These pollutants are mainly reducing agents which may directly injure the grasses or increase soil acidity thereby reducing vigour. There are other kinds of atmospheric pollutants and the symptoms and effects on turf grasses of several of these is reviewed. The control of pollution injury, by means other than the elimination of pollution, depends mainly on the use of tolerant species and cultivars. These are available in some turfgrass species. The diagnosis of the cause of injury is important in the selection and breeding of resistant grasses." |
