Abstract/Contents:"The effects of two types of fibre (straight and crimped) at four application rates (0-0.75% on a weight basis) were studied on a sand carpet construction receiving simulated football-type wear. At the higher rates of fibre incorporation the surface generally had higher traction, higher ball rebound and higher hardness readings. All these factors are indicative of a potentially more stable surface which is importsnt particularly towards the end of the playing season when ground cover has been lost through wear. A slight reduction in ground cover at the higher rates of fibre incorporation relative to the unreinforced sand was noted towards the end of the first season of wear, but on all other dates no significant effects on ground cover were recorded. Laboratory measurements of hydraulic conductivity, total porosity and air-filled porosity suggested that the presence of the fibres slowed the rate of compaction of the materials leading to greater permeability and higher air-filled porosity where the fibres were present."
