Abstract/Contents:Soils used for making turf rootzones contained c. 50 000 viable weed seeds per m2, of which c. 35 000 were able to germinate immediately. The average weed population was c. 400 plants per m2. At normal Poa pratensis, Festuca rubra and Lolium perenne seed rates the number of weed seeds introduced by sowing [tabulated] was no more than 50-2. N, P and K fertilizing reduced the number of weeds in turf compared with unfertilized controls, with N having the greatest effect. Because of different soil composition and nutrient status requirements, some weed species were found in West Jutland but not on the Islands, and vice versa [species tabulated]. Earthworm casts may provide niches for weed invasion of turf.
