Abstract/Contents:In a trial on a sandy soil the quality and strength of sod grown from 25 different seed-mixture and seed-rate combinations were assessed. Eight mixtures of bent, fescue and smooth-stalked meadow-grass, sown at 3 different rates, were compared with a commercial mixture for medium-textured sod. At 15-months the trial was sampled for sod strength tests with a specially built machine. The best treatment gave 40% stronger sod than the worst, though neither was significantly different from the commercial mixture. Of the 8 experimental mixtures, theoretically the best was the one consisting entirely of rhizomatous cvs, i.e. 10% browntop bent (Agrostis castellana) cv. Highland, 40% slender creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. litoralis) cv. Dawson and 50% smooth-stalked meadow-grass (Poa pratensis) cv. Baron. Seed-rate (112, 168 or 224 kg/ha) had no marked influence; the highest was best during establishment but the lowest gave slightly stronger sod.
